While many of Trey’s ballads get mocked in the Phish community, “Drifting” has remained immune from attacks. First debuted on the winter 2001 Trey solo tour, it has remained in heavy rotation in that band’s setlists. There’s a simple beauty in this song making it the ballad of choice for those who don’t like slow songs.
“Drifting” has been played just once by Phish. In a set where each member of the band chose a song from their side projects to play – kind of a ‘show and tell’ of what they did during the hiatus – Trey’s contribution was “Drifting.” The version played on 2/26/03 in Worcester was solid even if most fans of the solo project didn’t feel that it reached the heights that Trey’s “other” band brings to the song. For now the Phish fan base will have to be happy with this; but perhaps once again the fog will lift revealing the lights overhead.
