MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 294

Welcome to the 294th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the first* and easiest of October. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of the mystery clip. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday. Good luck!

*Reminder: For the first MJM of each month, only folks who have never won an MJM are allowed to answer before the hint. If you have never won an MJM, please answer as a blog comment below. If you have previously won an MJM, but you'd like to submit a guess before the hint, you may do so by PMing me; once the hint has been posted, everyone should answer on the blog. If that's confusing to you, check out the handy decision tree I threw together to help guide you. If you're not sure if you've won before, check in the MJM Results spreadsheet linked below.

Answer: We have a winner, by PM – congrats to @FunkyCFunkyDo on rapidly identifying this week's MJM, a show for which he was undoubtedly in attendance (being a PNWer): 7/27/13 "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley" (-> 2001). Do yourself a favor and listen to that breathtaking outro jam while imagining yourself at the Gorge... yup. Funky's sixth win puts him on the precipice of MJM Emeritus status, ahead of all other active MJM contestants. Let's hope for the sake of the challenge that he chooses an MJM of a high degree of difficulty as his swan song! We're back for two clips and a theme on Monday for MJM295.

uctweezer I won't be able to update the blog exactly at 10 AM PT, but if no one who's never previously won an MJM has answered correctly by then, it's over!

I've received two correct answers from previous winners (only the first one wins).

15 minutes, go!

FunkyCFunkyDo Thanks @ucpete! I do seem to have a knack for the week 1 and 2 MJMs (which usually tend to fall into my wheelhouse of 2003-present), but this one in particular was a deeeeeep pick (imo)! This Sally contains some serious Meatball Mike before shifting into a more tonal, melodic jam, which then evaporates into some pretty deep (and pretty, deep) space (the MJM segment connects the two aforementioned sections of Sally). This whole show (and Gorge 2013) somehow flies under the radar. 7.27.13 is easily one of Phish's most complete and fluid second sets of the last 8 years. Imagine how DWD -> Undermind > Light -> Sally -> 2001 > WOTC > Fluffhead > Antelope would have been received at Baker's Dozen... just sayin. Also, for fans of Waves, check out 7.26.13 Waves - my favorite version to date; and for fans of Undermind, check out this show's version for an amazing mid-jam sassy breakdown, a soaring TTE-esque outro jam, and some terrifying dissonance before Light. What a ride!

Gorge always delivers!

drshaws Sonofabeach. In my spare moments yesterday, I went hunting for recent 2001 jams (could smell it in Fishman in the first few seconds of the clip). Never thought it was something INTO 2001. Dammit.

Great breakdown! That second set, and the whole weekend, changed my life. I remember someone calling that Sally "pornographic" right after it happened, and it certainly was. The clip was veeeeeery sneaky though, and even though I'm upset I didn't recognize it, it just makes me appreciate that Sally and that second set even more. Spaceship blasted off, for sure.

In fact, while I've heard no confirmations about it, I believe Martian Monster came from that 2001 jam. Were that 2001 played after 10/31/14, that 2013 Gorge setlist could read 2001->MM->2001->MM->2001, perhaps even a few more times.
